  43.  
  44.         This disk contains the ELSA WINNER Display Driver for
  45.         Microsoft Windows 95.
  46.  
  47.     The drivers support 256, 32768 and 16 Million colors in all
  48.     resolutions available on used ELSA WINNER board.
  49.  
  50.         For the WINNER 2000PRO/X and WINNER 1000AVI there is the
  51.         multiple screen dispatcher MULTIman available. So you can
  52.         display the Windows desktop on two or more monitors to get a
  53.         bigger working place.

  110. 3.      Installation
  111.  
  112.     This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER
  113.         Display Driver for Windows 95.
  114.  
  115.         To install the drivers, start the program SETUP.EXE in this
  116.         directory. The installation assistant will help you to install
  117.         the driver with the control panel.
  118.  
  119. 3.1     Install over older versions of the ELSA WINNER Driver
  120.  
  121.     - Delete in the WINDOWS\INF directory the copies of the
  122.       older versions ELSADISP.INF (named OEM?.INF).
  123.     - Install the original MS-S3 driver to build a new Device
  124.       Information Database.
  125.     - Now follow th steps, described in section 3.2.
  126.

  128. 3.2     First installation of ELSA WINNER Display Drivers
  129.  
  130.     First install Windows 95 without special drivers for the ELSA
  131.     WINNER graphics board. The installation procedure should
  132.     install a Microsoft driver for boards based on S3 chips.
  133.  
  134.     The installation of the ELSA WINNER Display Driver starts from
  135.     the Windows desktop.
  136.  
  137.     - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  138.       mouse button on the desktop or per Control Panel.
  139.     - Select the Property Page "Settings"
  140.     - Push the button "Change Display Type...". A dialog "Change
  141.       Display Type" will pop up.
  142.     - Push the button "Change..." inside the frame "Adapter Type".
  143.       You will see the "Select Device" dialog.
  144.     - In this dialog push the button "Have Disk..." and change to
  145.           the WIN95 directory on the ELSAware CD for your WINNER board.
  146.         - Select in the "Manufacturer" list ELSA WINNER Display Driver
  147.           and in the list "Models" your WINNER board.
  148.     - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  149.       "Monitor Type" in the "Change Display Type" dialog.
  150.         - Close the dialog "Change Display Type". At this time the
  151.           screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  152.           find out, which graphics modes are available with this
  153.           driver.
  154.         - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  155.           dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  156.           you should select 1024x768 and 256 colors. This configuration
  157.           is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  158.           Boards.
  159.         - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  160.           now".
  161.  
  162.     Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  163.     now".
  164.  
  165.     In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  166.     without rebooting your system.
  167.  
  168. 3.3.    MULTIman Installation
  169.  
  170.         The MULTIman installation occurs exact in the same way as the
  171.         normal display drivers.
  172.  
  173.                 !!! IMPORTANT NOTE !!!
  174.  
  175.         Because Windows evaluates the maximal resolution of your
  176.         installed monitor, you normally will not have the option to
  177.         select a high resolution in the Display Control Panel. To
  178.         circumvent this, before you install the MULTIman, you must
  179.         select the "MULTIman" monitor
  180.         (.../Monitor Type/Change.../Have Disk)
  181.  
  182.         Not also to have plugged in ALL graphics boards, you want to
  183.         use with MULTIman, before you install the MULTIman driver.
  184.         If you want to remove one additional board, FIRST select a
  185.         normal driver.

  259. 5.      Release notes
  260.  
  261. 5.1     ELSA.INI entries
  262.  
  263.     The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the
  264.     file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to
  265.     mak this settings working. In later releases ELSA will
  266.     distribute a tool change working paramters more easy.
  267.  
  268.     The following table shows the meaning of this entries:
  269.  
  270.     Section [Settings]
  271.  
  272.     CursorFG/CursorBK
  273.         ColorCursor
  274.  
  275.         With this two entries you can change the color of the
  276.         hardware cursor. The format is:
  277.             CursorFG=0xrrggbb
  278.         at which rr, gg and bb are the hexadecimal values in
  279.                 the range 00 to FF of the base color components.
  280.                 You must specify ColorCursor=1 to make this working!
  281.  
  282.     RefreshRate
  283.                 no longer supported!
  284.  
  285.         TI-Snow
  286.                 Set this value to 1, if the screen flickers around the
  287.                 cursor shape while changing the pattern.
  288.                 This switch works only on WINNER 2000PRO/X, -AVI and
  289.                 GLoria.
  290.  
  291.         Format555
  292.                 Set this value to 1 to force the 5-5-5 color format in
  293.                 16BPP modes.
  294.  
  295.  
  296.     Section [Hardware]
  297.  
  298.     CursorType
  299.  
  300.         In few resolution/color combinations on some S3-based
  301.         graphic boards the hardware cursor doesn't work. In
  302.         this cases you can force the usage of a software cursor
  303.         by inserting the line
  304.             CursorType=SW
  305.         in your ELSA.INI file.
  306.         This affects WINNER 1000 ISA/EISA, VL and PCI.
  307.  
  308.     Video-RAM base address and size
  309.  
  310.         Windows'95 needs direct access to the frambuffer of
  311.         your graphics board. Normally this takes place by 64kB
  312.         segments, mapped into the address space above 0A0000h.
  313.         On VL and PCI systems you can map the full video RAM
  314.         into the host address space. This increases the
  315.         performance of multimedia applications.
  316.         For example, insert the line
  317.             VRAM-Base=0xA0000000
  318.         to map the video RAM at the physical address
  319.         A00000000h.
  320.         Note that this address has to be above the end of your
  321.         main memory and that it has to be a multiple of the RAM
  322.         size of your graphics board. Additionally the end of the
  323.         graphics RAM must not be above the addressable range of
  324.         your bus type. These are for ISA bus 16MB, VL 128MB and
  325.         PCI 4GB.
  326.         If you specify a VRAM-Base you also need to insert a
  327.         VRAM-Size entry:
  328.           for WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  329.               WINNER 2000PRO/X and GLoria use
  330.             VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  331.           and for all other (previous) WINNER use
  332.           the size of the video memory in bytes.
  333.  
  334.  
  335. 5.2.    DirectDraw support
  336.  
  337.         The display drivers do support DirectDraw, but to use it in an
  338.         application, you must install DirectDraw. The Microsoft
  339.         DirectDraw components are not included in the standard retail
  340.         version of Windows 95.
  341.  
  342.         To install DirectDraw start the program DXSETUP ind the
  343.         directory \ELSAWARE\DDRAW\DIRECTX on the ELSA CD
  344.  
  345.  
  346.  
  347. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  348.  
  349. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  350.  
  351.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  352.     hints on work arounds.
  353.  
  354.  
  355. 6.1     Videomode not available
  356.  
  357.     Because the controls for Desktop area and Color resolution
  358.     display ALL possible modes on ALL WINNER boards not all
  359.     indicated resolutions are available. The attempt to select such
  360.     a mode fails. Windows rejects this attempt with a corresponding
  361.     notification message.
  362.  
  363.  
  364. 6.2     No mouse pointer visible
  365.  
  366.         On the WINNER 1000, WINNER 1000VL, and WINNER 1000PCI under
  367.         32 bpp no mouse pointer is visible. Enable Mouse Trails with a
  368.         very short trail in "Properties for Mouse" in the Control Panel.
  369.  
  370.  
  371. 6.3     After the installation no mouse cursor is visible
  372.  
  373.     Probably there is no ELSA WINNER graphics driver active, but
  374.     a standard driver for Microsoft S3 processors. This driver
  375.     cannot recognize the the ELSA WINNER graphics board correctly.
  376.  
  377.     - To avoid this problem please install the ELSA WINNER graphics
  378.       driver for Windows 95.
  379.     - Shut down Windows 95 with ALT-F4. While starting press F8.
  380.       In the following menu choose the third entry "3. Save mode".
  381.       Windows 95 will now start in a save mode with standard VGA
  382.       resolution. Now install the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows 95.
  383.  
  384.     or:
  385.     - Activate the software cursor (e.g. animated mouse cursor) or
  386.       the mouse track.
  387.  
  388.     Hints:
  389.     When the Device Manager recognizes the ELSA WINNER graphics
  390.         board correctly, it is possible that no ELSA WINNER driver is
  391.         active.
  392.     With the Device Manager you can get information for all
  393.     drivers (e.g. company). With the ELSA driver you will find
  394.     the entry "ELSA GmbH Aachen (Germany)".
  395.  
  396.  
  397. 6.4     WINNER 1000AVI-VL
  398.  
  399.     This board works only with up to 64MB main memory. The S3 chips
  400.     868/968 need 64MB physical address space and the VL-bus can
  401.     only access 128 MB. For this board use the following entries
  402.     in the section [Hardware] in your ELSA.INI file:
  403.         VRAM-Base=0x4000000
  404.         VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  405.  
  406.  
  407. 6.5     QuickRes 2.0 and Hardware Cursor
  408.  
  409.         Now it is possible to change the current Color-resolution
  410.         (BPP) without rebooting Windows. Microsoft QuickRes 2.0
  411.         switches the CursorType to Software when changing the
  412.         color resolution. You can switch back to Hardware Cursor with
  413.         "Properties for Mouse". Click Motion/Trail "on" and "off".
  414.  
  415. 6.6.    Unknown and PnP-monitors
  416.  
  417.         If you don't have selected a Monitor or you have a PnP (DDC1)
  418.         Monitor, in all graphics modes the default refresh rate is
  419.         60Hz. The DDC case is becaus a bug in Windows DDC support
  420.         You can change to a higher refresh rate with the program
  421.         WINman. WINman, unlike Windows, can evaluate the monitor
  422.         information provaided by DDC exact.
  423.  
  424. 6.7.    Cursor corruption
  425.  
  426.         If you see some "snow" araound the cursor shape while changing
  427.         the pattern, insert the line
  428.                 TI-Snow=1
  429.         in the section [Settings] of your ELSA.INI file.
  430.         ! This fix slows down the performance of the cursor changing
  431.         ! operations !
  432.  
  433. 6.8.    MULTIman problems
  434.  
  435.         see section 7.3.

  440. 7.      Notes for the multiple screen dispatcher MULTIman
  441.  
  442. 7.1.    Supported boards
  443.  
  444.         MULTIman only supports two or more WINNER 2000PRO/X boards.
  445.  
  446. 7.2.    Direct Draw and DCI
  447.  
  448.         MULTIman doesn't support Direct Draw nor DCI.
  449.  
  450. 7.3.    Known MULTIman bugs and problems
  451.  
  452. 7.3.1.  Software cursors
  453.  
  454.         Usage of software cursors (Mouse Trails or Color Pointers)
  455.         may cause screen corruption. Please use hardware cursor when
  456.         ever possible.
  457.         This bug will be fixed in the next driver revision.
  458.  
  459. 7.3.1.  GLoria & WINNER 2000PRO/X and 16BPP
  460.  
  461.         If you use a GLoria and a WINNER 2000PRO/X board in 16BPP mode
  462.         under MULTIman you must specify the entry
  463.                 Format555=1
  464.         in the section [settings] of your ELSA.INI file.
